C40 World Ports Climate Conference

Programme WPCC 2008

On November 26 and 27, representatives from 14  ports (1) convened in Rotterdam to discuss initiatives and approaches towards reducing CO2 emissions. The ports were brought together under the auspices of the C40 Large Cities Climate Leadership Group and supported by the Clinton Climate Initiative.

During this Preparatory Conference presentations were held by leading experts in the field and in five working sessions best practices were shared amongst the participants. The result of the meeting is a first draft for a World Ports Climate Declaration, in which initiatives are agreed upon to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in port area's, especially emissions from deep sea shipping, port operations and design and hinterland transport. Also, ways to promote the use of renewable energy and the development of a CO2 footprint for ports are part of this Declaration.

In the next six months this Declaration will be further worked out in detail by the participating ports and initiatives will be taken to involve other leading ports from around the globe.

On July 9, 10 and 11 2008 the World Ports Climate Conference will be held in Rotterdam.

On that occasion, delegates from more than 30 ports and cities will attend to underwrite the Declaration. The first announcement of this Conference will follow in January 2008.
